The Creighton Prep powerlifting team, with seven straight state championships under its belt, once again made another impressive run to a state title. With returning stars such as Nic Thurman, who set multiple records in squat, bench and deadlift for his weight class at state, Prep roared out to another successful meet. Thurman also won best overall lifter at the 2017 state meet.

“There were very strong improvements that I saw with our team this year, especially with the returning seniors,” said head coach Dan Barton.

A couple of other big contributors to the team were lifters such as George Diers, who placed second in in his weight class with a squat of 270 and a bench of 130. As a whole, Prep relied on a strong showing from all its lifters to win at state.

“Powerlifting was a very big success this year, especially since it was my senior season,” said senior leader Ed Gordon.

Powerlifting has only been at Prep since 2009, but since then Prep has won state every single year, including their eighth straight this year. The Junior Jays have no plans of stopping, looking forward to a potential ninth straight next year and for another opportunity to continue their dominance.
