On Wednesday, February 26, 24 Prep students traveled with three Prep teachers to Boston for Harvard Model Congress. This four-day conference held in the Sheraton Hotel gave Prep students the opportunity to assume a role in a mock government where they represented an assigned role, drafted legislation and voted on policy.

Most students participated in a Senate or House subcommittee. These subcommittees specialized in departments, such as energy, transportation, defense and intelligence.

Other Prep delegates were on committees such as the White House Cabinet, the Supreme Court and the National Security Council. All delegates had to read pre-committee briefings. Depending on the committee, some students also had to complete pre-conference research and an assignment.

In between conference sessions, students explored the historic neighborhoods of Boston, experienced the fine cuisine of New England and met other delegates from around the country.

Senior Luke Bausch said, “I had a good experience with a great group of guys. We represented Prep well and its values well throughout the trip and still had fun.”

Senior Charles Erker, a veteran delegate, agreed saying, “This year’s conference once again allowed Prep students to grow in their knowledge of the world, specifically the politics of our country and the world, as well as socialize with other high schoolers from all over the country, while in one of the most beautiful and historic settings in the US, Boston.”

This once in a lifetime opportunity to traverse Boston with friends and learn more about national government roles and operations is open annually to Prep juniors and seniors.
