Prep vs. Norfolk Preview

Charlie Johnson, Jay Journal Staff

The playoffs are finally here, and the sixth seeded Creighton Prep Junior Jays are taking on the eleventh seeded Norfolk Panthers. The Panthers are 6-3 on the year, with losses to Bellevue West, Lincoln East and Burke. The Junior Jays are coming off a strong performance over Lincoln Northeast, a 56-12 victory.

The playoffs are win or go home and the tournament is single elimination. The stakes are even higher than any other normal game.

Norfolk Coach Tom Olson said, “the preparation does not really change, but there is a sense of immediacy when you have a win or go home game.”

The Jays have a tough test ahead of them if they can advance. On their side of the bracket they have Millard North and Bellevue West in their sights to the state championship. If anybody is up to the test, it is the Jays.

Senior quarterback A.J. Hubner has been a star throughout the year, throwing for 31 touchdowns and over 2000 yards so far this year. If his play keeps up and the Jays keep winning, he has a shot of breaking the Nebraska state record for touchdowns thrown. The current record is at 34 touchdowns by Dan Woodhead.

Tonight’s game is at 7 p.m. at Benson High School. The theme is Blue-out.
