The golf team is gunning to repeat the success of last year. Getting third at last year’s state championship the team is looking rather promising and younger. Two of the five golfers from that state team return, being Tommy Kelley and Jimmy Melton.
”Yeah, Tommy is really going to be our guy, and after him I think it’s going to be a really healthy battle for the 4 other spots on the team.” head coach Matt Rasgorshek said.
But it’s not just the juniors and seniors who are going to be doing the heavy lifting this year. The team is very young with three sophomores and seven freshmen. Freshmen like Harper Kalin and Parker Gibson have impressed coaches. But Jack Kelley, brother of Tommy Kelley, could make a serious push for a top team spot.
“My little brother Jack, he’s gonna have a really good season,” said junior Tommy Kelley. “He’s put a lot of work in and is playing good golf.”
The young golfers on the team are going to play a big role during the season in pushing each other and pushing the juniors and seniors to be better.
“I think that it’ll be good that the younger guys kind of push the older guys to get better, because you never want to lose to a freshman or one of the younger guys so it’ll be huge for us and those guys,” Kelley said.
But the team might have tough competition this year. Omaha Westside, Lincoln East and Lincoln Southeast will be some of the toughest competition. But others like Kearney and Millard West are also solid teams this year.
“Westside, Lincoln East and Lincoln Southeast will all be really good competition for us. They all have really good one through fives, but so do we,” Rasgorshek said..
The team is looking for very promising, from young, exciting golfers to older more experienced golfers. They all look to improve on last year’s success and take home a state championship.
“If we just take care of business during the season and play our game, we can take care of business at state too,” Kelley said.
