Prep vs. Millard North Preview

Creighton Prep football has the biggest game of the year Friday. Two Class A powerhouses clash for the second time this season. The Jays are facing their common rival, the Millard North Mustangs. All eyes will be on what adjustments the Jays have made since their heart wrenching 17-12 loss to Millard North on September 16.

Since that loss to the Mustangs, the Jays are undefeated with a 6-0 record. Last week, against the Norfolk Panthers, the Jays escaped with a tight win in the final seconds. The Jays trailed for most of the game, facing a deficit in every quarter. The game changed for good after AJ Hubner’s touchdown pass to Drew Dunham who went untouched into the end zone. The drama was far from over. Norfolk drove down field and had four opportunities to throw toward the end zone. Norfolk senior quarterback Tayen Meyer found an open receiver in the end zone and decided to test his arm. With the ball traveling through the air, junior cornerback Kevin Cooper batted the ball down, preserving the 35-31 victory.

The Mustangs had an easier route to victory last week. Facing Westside in the first round, Millard North won handily 52-14. In the playoffs, anything can happen and the Jays are looking to spoil Millard North’s dreams of repeating as state champions.

The Jays are lead by senior quarterback AJ Hubner who has put up record numbers, while the Mustangs are lead by senior defensive back Jack Begley. Begley is the head of a gritty defense for the Mustangs. Begley is a North Dakota State commit, who is accompanied in the secondary by Aaron Gerdes, a Hawaii baseball commit.

Look for Friday’s game to be a test of heart, will, and determination. The game is at Buell Stadium (Millard South). The kick off is at 7 p.m.
