Creighton Prep football defied all the expectations this year. The team came into the season with many questions surrounding the team, including who would the starting quarterback be. The Jays answered these questions emphatically with win after win, only stumbling with a pair of heartbreaking losses to Burke and Millard North. Both of the losses could have been won on the last play of the game, which made them even more heart-wrenching.

One of the factors that led this team to a semi-final appearance in the state playoffs, was senior quarterback AJ Hubner. Hubner had a record breaking year, throwing a total of 40 passing touchdowns throughout the year. Hubner tied the record for single game passing touchdowns with 6 against the  Kearney Bearcats and the Papillion La-Vista Monarchs. Hubner also finished with 2 rushing touchdowns in the season. One of AJ’s favorite targets was senior Shannon Brewer. Brewer finished the season with a total of 1,233 all purpose yards, including 829 receiving yards.

Creighton Prep football has always been one of the most feared football programs in the state of Nebraska. Prep holds the record for most football state championships, with 27 in total.

Hubner said, “we didn’t get our final goal but it was a great season. We did our duty of putting Prep football back on top and giving the program a positive image.”

The Jays were on a quest for number 28, but Bellevue West stood in their way. Prep started out strong and even led at halftime, but the third quarter was a downfall for the ages. The Jays fell to a 41-17 deficit entering the fourth quarter, and could not recover. The great season came to an unfitting end with a 55-17 loss to the Thunderbirds.
