Athletes Move on to Next Arena

On National Signing Day, seven Prep athletes committed to colleges to play athletics. The Jay Journal asked them about their decision and why they chose their individual colleges.

Ed Gordon, soccer, UNO

“I decided to go to UNO to keep playing soccer ultimately, that was the end goal. Fortunately, UNO was the school that checked all the boxes (Coaches, campus, education, facilities, location, price, etc). What made me want to attend UNO was it was the perfect combination of everything that I was looking for in a school pretty much what I mentioned earlier. The major factors were playing time, price, location, and coaches. I don’t have to pay tuition, I’ll play a bit my freshman year, it’s in my hometown which is a HUGE plus, and I know the coaches from playing under them in club soccer. Checked all the boxes.”
Tim Kaftan, soccer, UNO
“I decided to go to UNO because it has an amazing variety of career building opportunities. I can study for a degree and at the same time play the sport I love! The campus is really nice along with the soccer teammates I already know. I’m really excited for the soccer season and all of the friendships that the soccer team will offer.”
Matthew Smith, soccer, UNO
“Academics always comes first, and that’s the main reason why I chose UNO. They have an outstanding business program that I am very excited to dive into. Having the opportunity to be apart of the soccer team is a great bonus. I get to stay close to home so I’ll have an awesome local fan base. The team just seemed like the right fit for me, along with my pals Tim and Ed who will also be attending UNO.”
Peter Gerhls, football, Air Force
“One of the biggest reasons I decided to commit to Air Force was because being able to continue playing football while having the opportunity to serve my country was too much too pass up.”

Barrett Foley, football, Lindenwood
“I chose Lindenwood essentially because of a combination of everything that I was looking for in a college and also in a football program. The coaches were the biggest the draw in for me, I knew nothing about Lindenwood prior to taking an official visit there. I fell in love with the campus (including all of the athletic facilities as well), and the Economics professor that I talked to was very intelligent and from what I have heard, Lindenwood’s business program is solid and the school itself is in a prime location for both business and entertainment, being right outside of St. Louis.”
Also committing: Shannon Brewer and Kaz Nicholson to UNK for football. Congratulations to all the athletes!
