Senior leadership is an important aspect of any team when it comes to athletics. The Creighton Prep football team has that kind of leadership. Seniors Art Egan, AJ Hubner and Andrew Emodi lead a group of football players into a new season with Prep being ranked number ten in the Omaha World-Herald Class A rankings.

“The senior class has bought into the program. Together, they are very cohesive and goal oriented,” said head coach Andy Yost.

The annual Blue-White game was played on Saturday, August 24, where turnovers stole the show. The quarterbacks accounted for five turnovers, but a string of throws from quarterback Hubner to junior Grant Matthies, including a touchdown were a bright spot. “We don’t want to try and force the issue with AJ. All we want is for him to control the game and not turn the ball over,”said Yost.

The Blue team defeated the White team 20-0 with two touchdown throws from Hubner and a rushing touchdown from senior Nate Reiner.

“After the Blue-White game, we were about 85 percent, and now we are working for 95 percent before Friday,” said Emodi.

Friday marks the first official game for the Junior Jays as they take on cross-town rivals,  Westside.

“You have to focus. Focus on school. Focus when you’re on the field. We gottta watch film and build team chemistry,” Hubner said.

Prep’s defense is determined to stop a Westside running back who ran all over them last year.

Yost said, “our main focus is to control the line of scrimmage. We got gutted last year and that can’t happen again.”

The Junior Jays look to avenge a disappointing loss last year to the Warriors as the two rivals clash at Burke Stadium on Friday, August 26 with a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
