Prep Students Build Together
October 3, 2016
The Habitat for Humanity club at Prep provides decent and affordable housing for those who struggle to purchase a house of their own. Students helped primarily with framing. Students who were signed up to participate in the Habitat for Humanity club were able to help with the ‘Framing Frenzy’ event on Saturday, October 1, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., where they set up the framework for a house.
Named ‘Framing Frenzy’ for the general craziness of building with many volunteers, this project was built for the less fortunate community. The location of the build is an area around 20th Street.
“The best part is definitely when you are down in the area and you see other people who are spending their Saturdays or Fridays off helping others, and you get to work alongside the people for whose house it is,” said senior Thomas Kennedy.
This year’s first build for Habitat for Humanity took place on Saturday, October 1, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m, and the remaining builds are on November 11, January 16, February 17 and April 21, all from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
According to Kennedy, volunteering can be a lot of fun.
“My [favorite] first ever build was right after I turned sixteen, so it was in February of my sophomore year. We had this demolition in this really old house, and they gave us all sledgehammers and we were dressed in what looked like astronaut suits. There was so much soot and dirt in the house that we came out and our faces looked like we came out of a coal mine,” said Kennedy.
Prep participates in about five projects a year. Some include demolition, framing, siding, pouring concrete, flooring and finishing of houses.
For Kennedy, Habitat for Humanity has been a great way to learn building, teamwork and service to the community.
“It’s a good opportunity for a group of guys to go out and work alongside people who live in poverty and it’s a good experience to get out and help those around Omaha who have less than you,” said Kennedy.
