Swimming Searches for Eleven Straight

After an unparalleled run of success, including ten straight state titles, the Creighton Prep Swim and Dive team is still hungry for more.

The team comes into the season with high expectations for themselves, as only the best is acceptable.

Senior Jacob Sutej said, “our expectations are to win an 11th straight state championship while all achieving to our highest potentials. We also want to set a state record in the 200 medley relay, and we want to set the record for most points ever scored at state for a boys team.”

Although the goals may be lofty, the team is ready for the challenge and poised for success.

Seniors leaders of the team Jacob Sutej, Will Tjaden, Sam Buechler and Caleb Piti identified freshman Danny Perry and junior Connor Funke as being crucial for the team’s well-being.

Buechler said, “I think that Danny Perry will be pivotal to the team’s success this year, particularly in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. As just a freshman, he posted two automatic state cuts at the first meet of the season as well as personal bests for him. He will be a big point scorer at the state meet this year and for several years to come.”

One of the team’s strengths is their mettle in the team relays. At the Westside swim meet on December 6, Prep won the 200 medley relay, in addition to having the A team win the 200 freestyle relay with the B team finishing second in the event. Overall, Prep won the meet, a key stepping-stone in their quest for another state championship.

In addition to the team goal of winning another state title, individual swimmers have their own goals.

Tjaden said, “my personal goal for the season is to go under 21 in the 50 free and to break the medley relay record alongside my teammates.”

The swim team is back, reloaded and ready for another season of hard work. Their ultimate goal of a state championship remains unchanged, with the team looking to set records along the way. Either way, the Prep swim team is once again the team to beat in Nebraska.
