Sobetski takes on the Big Apple

Aaron Sobetski is making waves with his fashion designs. The senior crafts and creates dresses in his free time, and his designs have begun to pick up traction on a national scale. Sobetski’s work featured in New York Fashion Week, a mecca of sorts for the fashion industry. According to the Wall Street Journal, 125,000 people attend the fashion shows at the event, with about two million more people viewing the shows through online streams.

Sobetski’s work had been shown at Omaha Fashion Week previously and he had opened for a New York designer in the past. This time, however, his foray into the New York City fashion scene featured his work as a stand-alone line.

Sobetski is ecstatic that his line of dresses are being shown at such a large event.

“It’s immeasurable. There are shows going on 24/7, and there are millions of designers watching these shows,” said Sobetski.

The process for creating these dresses was arduous and time-consuming for Sobetski. Dress design is a multi-step process and designs may be tossed away after many hours of work if the author no longer enjoys their design.

As he progressed in knowledge and experience, his creative process evolved as well.

“For my new lines, it took a lot of research. I had to sketch it, then drape it, then do all the measurements. There’s a lot of math that goes into it,” said Sobetski.

Overall, having fashion displayed at the New York Fashion Week is a significant accomplishment for any designer, and especially for one still in high school.

“It’s unbelieveable. It’s like a dream come true,” said Sobetski.
